The State Coastal Police is joining the bandwagon of police agencies on popular cross-platform mobile messaging service WhatsApp to enable faster and easier sharing of information.


The Thiruvananthapuram city police, apart from other district and city police agencies in the State, have already started making use of WhatsApp to help the public share information, including tip-offs, photographs, and other information, with police officials, with the mobile numbers of the officers concerned being publicised across mainstream and social media platforms.

The coastal police version of WhatsApp, according to a senior police official, will aim at gathering information on “terrorist activities, use of fishing boats for smuggling, human trafficking, infiltration of refugees via sea and on violation of international maritime boundaries by fishing groups”.

Photographs or any information on such matters can be sent directly to the Additional Director-General of Police (Coastal) on 94979 99996, or to the AIG, Coastal Police, on 94979 96910.

While these numbers will be the same for information pertaining to all the eight coastal police stations in the State, the number for each coastal police station would be that of the Circle Inspector concerned.

For Thiruvananthapuram, the Circle Inspector in charge of coastal security from Kollengode on the Tamil Nadu- Kerala border to Kappil in Varkala will be available on WhatsApp on 94979 87478.Confidential

Information and photographs, including phone numbers of those who share it with the coastal police, will be kept confidential, according to S. Ajayakumar, Sub Inspector, Vizhinjam Coastal Police Station, who added that the initiative would come in handy for the coastal police even to help fishermen in distress out in the sea.

The Rajasthan police on aunched WhatsApp numbers on which women in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota cities can report cases of crimes against them.

The service is especially for women but it can also be used by common people to alert police about crimes, director general of police Omendra Bhardwaj said after the launch.

He said the crime and atrocities could be reported on WhatsApp through video and audio recordings, photos and voice messages. “The WhatsApp numbers are connected with the police control rooms and will be monitored regularly. The police will act from police stations and mobile patrol vehicles on receiving complaints,” Bhardwaj said, adding that the initiative was being introduced in three cities on a pilot basis.

The officer said the service would be handy for women who could click pictures of number plates of the accused’s vehicles and send to police through WhatsApp. The identity of informers would be kept secret and they would be considered as friends of police.

FIR E-STATUS

The state police launched another initiative ‘FIR e-status’ where a person can track progress of First Information Report in any police station.

The DGP said a link has been given on the police website through which the progress of FIRs could be tracked on mobile phones. This way the people would no longer be required to run to police station to obtain the status of their FIRs, he added.

The police have developed a module on the website http://police.rajasthan.gov.in where a person can find the link to track FIR status. The link can also be obtained through http://police. rajasthan.gov.in/GetFirStatus.aspx.

The FIR status can be found by selecting the police district, police station and year of registration besides entering the FIR number, name of applicant and father/ husband and mobile number. On entering all details, the current status of the FIR would be conveyed on the mobile number provided in the form through an SMS. Status of all cases pending and those registered on or after February 2011 is currently being provided through this facility.
